The Cali Country Story

Andrea

Welcome to Cali Country! I’m Andrea, the heart and hands behind this venture. My story begins in the sun-drenched suburbs of California, a place where my childhood dreams of animal companionship were often curtailed by my dad’s allergies. Gills and garage life were the norm for our limited menagerie, a far cry from the sprawling pastures I later envisioned.

The possibility of riding horses, a long-held dream, unexpectedly blossomed in my late twenties. Discovering that horsemanship wasn’t bound by age, I eagerly found a local equestrian center and was instantly captivated. Then, in 2018, a new relationship led me to the tranquil countryside. Embracing the unknown, I found myself just a stone’s throw from the stables, a proximity that ignited a desire for horse ownership.

Soon, I was immersed in the world of equestrianism, not only owning my own horse but also competing in Gymkhana and becoming a board member of our local riding club. It was at one of these meetings that fate intervened in the form of an adorable “oopsie” litter of baby rabbits – an offer I simply couldn’t refuse.

The slower pace of life during COVID brought another unexpected addition to our little world. Two abandoned ducklings, rescued by my then-boyfriend, found a nurturing home with us. Though these wild souls eventually returned to their natural habitat, it was the later gift of two domesticated ducklings that truly sparked my passion for homesteading.

While I currently navigate the limitations of a rental property, my vision for full-fledged homesteading burns bright. I dream of the day I can purchase my own slice of California and fully embrace this lifestyle. In the meantime, I’m dedicated to doing what I can, and I hope Cali Country can help me pave the way toward those goals. (And yes, finding affordable land in California is quite the adventure!)
